Theft Attorney in Chicago

Penalties for Theft

If you have been charged with theft, our firm is here to help you. The legal team at the Law Offices of Howard J. Wise & Associates provides vigilant defense to clients charged with theft in the Chicago area, throughout Cook County and the surrounding areas. We know how important it is to avoid conviction to protect your freedom and keep your record clean. Our purpose is to get you through this matter with the most favorable result possible. For help with your charge, we urge you to contact a Chicago criminal lawyer at our firm. We can handle virtually any type of theft crime case, including carjacking, robbery, burglary, theft by deception, identity theft, credit card theft, fraud, forgery and possession of a stolen vehicle.

The penalties for theft vary according to the charge and amount taken. Shoplifting, for example, is a crime that most often involves property valued at less than $300 taken without the use of force or violence. This theft crime may be classified as a Class A misdemeanor with a possible jail sentence of one year and a $2500 fine. If a defendant is accused of stealing less than $300 but this was taken directly from the victim, this becomes a Class 3 felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000. If the amount allegedly taken is $300 to $10000 (taken without force or violence), this is also a Class 3 felony.

Chicago, IL Theft Crime Lawyer

Our attorneys began their careers in criminal law working as prosecutors. There we learned how prosecutors think and act and now use that experience to our clients' benefit. We are vigilant as we look for holes in the prosecutor's case and are alert to violations of our clients' constitutional rights. Where there have been illegal searches, we bring motions to suppress the evidence. Where clients have been pressed to confess without respect of their rights, we move to throw out the confession. We work tirelessly for our clients to protect their freedom, reputation and keep their records clean.
